Audubon’s Shearwaters are small seabirds that return to land at night and nest in burrows or crevices. This research has been important in identifying key nesting areas.
EPIC’s research has contributed to the establishment of several Important Bird Areas (IBA), which are internationally recognized for their value in protecting birds.
EPIC conducted and published the first regional assessment of seabird populations for the Lesser Antilles covering 3,162 nautical miles and over 200 islands.
Our nocturnal surveys used two methods: marine radar and listening for a response to a broadcast of their calls. Results supported an Important Bird Area designation.
