Butler\\\'s View | By - Joy Dillon

Photo Location: Nelson Island, Trinidad and Tobago

Photo Description: Prior to 2023, I had never been to Nelson Island, so when the opportunity arose, I seized it. The rich history that I was exposed to during that day-visit was phenomenal and life-changing, as I imagined the likely feelings of newly arrived East Indian indentureship immigrants to this part of the world. To also learn that revered labour leader Tubal Uriah \'Buzz\' Butler was imprisoned there on two occasions, likewise intrigued me. As I entered his \'residence\', it felt as though I was reliving history. I wondered to myself how he must have felt on seeing this view. Did he imagine what was happening on the mainland in his absence? Was he at peace on seeing the water outside his bedroom window every day? Did this period give him time to achieve clarity of thought? Or did he feel alone and hopeless knowing that a potentially dangerous body of water stood between him and history?
