Islands Worth Protecting: Antigua and Barbuda's Offshore Islands | By - Sherrel Charles

Photo Location: Antigua and Barbuda

Photo Description: On one fieldwork day to the offshore islands, I brought my drone, Cashew, to capture some of the areas where we conduct invasive species management. Antigua and Barbuda has 51 offshore islands, and the EAG currently works on just over 12 through this effort. These islands lie within the North East Marine Management Area, which was our largest marine protected area before Redonda’s designation. They are vital habitats, home to endemic reptiles and important land, sea, and shorebird populations, making them Key Biodiversity and Important Bird Areas. Not only do wildlife depend on these islands, but Antiguans and Barbudans also enjoy them for fishing, camping, and relaxation. We must continue to protect these islands, not only for the species that rely on them, but also to ensure that future generations can witness and appreciate the natural treasures Antigua and Barbuda has to offer.
