Photo Description: The spirals of Christmas tree worms are radioles, delicate feeding and breathing appendages that unfurl to filter plankton from the water. Their colors are created by tiny structural features that scatter light, turning each worm into a living ornament on the reef. I was inspired to take this photo because these small animals are often overlooked, yet they are vital indicators of reef health. Each worm anchors itself into a coral head, forming a partnership that ties its survival to the survival of the coral beneath it. For me, this image captures both the beauty and the scientific wonder of Caribbean reefs. It reminds me that the smallest creatures can play outsized roles in the story of the sea.
