Photo Description: These birds are among the smallest of the world's tern species, the least tern. In St. Maarten/Saint Martin every year during the winter migration, we have areas where the birds come to breed and nest. In this photo the birds demonstrate part of their courtship ritual, where a fish is presented to the female by a male. If the fish is accepted, they may build a nest together. This "courtship feeding" is a way for the male to demonstrate his ability to provide for a potential mate and their offspring. Capturing this photo took patience, timing, and proper understanding of the subject.
