Lovey-Parakey | By - Daniela Ventura del Puerto
Photo Location: Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Photo Description: The charismatic and endangered Dominican endemic, the Hispaniolan Parakeet, was a must-see on my birdwatching wishlist. I failed to spot them during my initial five days in the mountainous contryside. My hopes were fading when I learned that a small and boisterous population had made its home in the heart of Santo Domingo’s old colonial city. I spent an entire morning immersed in their world, admiring and photographing several pairs as they frolicked in courtship rituals amid the crumbling ruins of a centuries-old Spanish hospital. Their vibrant chatter and tender displays of affection filled the air. Capturing their energy and intimacy through my lens made my heart feel light and joyful.
