Schoolchildren in Haiti learn about the Diablotin, or Black-capped Petrel.

Dear Friend,

As we approach the end of EPIC’s fiscal year on May 31, 2025 we reflect on a year of meaningful progress– and the vital role our supporters play in making it all possible. From the remote mountain forests of Haiti, where communities are helping safeguard the endangered Black-capped Petrel, to coastal regions where sustainable practices are taking root, your generosity powers every step of this journey.

But the work is far from over. With your help, we can expand this model to other vulnerable areas throughout the Caribbean. Every gift received before May 31 fuels our mission and helps ensure that both nature and communities continue to flourish. Your support isn’t just appreciated– it’s transformative.

Please join us in making a gift to the EPIC Fund before the end of our fiscal year, May 31st. Your generosity ensures the story of the Black-capped Petrel continues – a story where people and nature thrive together.

Black-capped Petrels live their whole lives "on-the-wing" only landing once a year in the highest mountains of Hispaniola to dig a nest burrow and raise a single chick with their mate.

FULL STORY

In the remote mountain forests of Haiti, a remarkable story of hope and transformation is unfolding. At the heart of this story is one of the world’s rarest seabirds, the Black-capped Petrel, also referred to as Diablotin, whose survival is intertwined with the lives of the people who share its habitat.

At EPIC, we believe that conservation without engagement is not sustainable.

The support of local communities has proven essential in preserving the Petrel and its habitat. With local partners, we have introduced sustainable farming practices that protect the Petrel’s nesting grounds while simultaneously providing local farmers with stable incomes.

The results have been transformative:

  • Locals embrace eco-friendly methods that sustain their livelihoods and the environment,
  • School children are eager to learn about environmental stewardship programs,
  • And in Boukan Chat, Haiti, the annual Black- capped Petrel Festival has become a proud tradition.

Today, the people of Boukan Chat no longer rely on outside resources to sustain these programs. They have taken more ownership of their future, ensuring that conservation and community development go hand in hand. This is the power of your support: an endangered seabird is safer, and an entire community is flourishing.

But our work is far from over. The Black-capped Petrel still faces significant threats, and there are many more communities where conservation can drive lasting change. Your gift today can help us expand these successful programs, protect vulnerable habitats, and empower communities across the Caribbean.

Please consider a gift of any amount to the EPIC Fund by the end of our fiscal year, May 31, 2025.

Together, we can continue to be EPIC.
